Is Premium Herbal Tea Worth Paying More For? How to Compare Cost Per Cup

A higher-priced herbal tea is not automatically better. The easier way to judge value is to look beyond the pack price and compare cost per cup, ingredients, format, sourcing, convenience and taste.

At Blue Tea, we think this is the simplest way to compare any herbal tea.

Start With Cost Per Cup

The basic calculation is:

Pack price ÷ number of servings = cost per cup

For example, our Butterfly Pea Flower Tea 100g is currently listed at ₹649 for 200 cups. That works out to:

₹649 ÷ 200 = ₹3.25 per cup.

For tea bags, the calculation is even easier. Our Butterfly Pea Flower Tea 200-teabag pack is currently ₹1,399:

₹1,399 ÷ 200 = ₹6.99 per cup, listed by Blue Tea as ₹6.90 per tea bag. The 300-teabag pack is ₹1,949, which works out to about ₹6.50 per cup.

This is why comparing only the front-of-pack price can be misleading.

Why Can Herbal Tea Cost More?

Several things can affect the price:

Ingredients: A blend made with several herbs, flowers or spices can have a different cost from a single-ingredient tea.

Sourcing: Where ingredients are sourced and how they are processed can affect pricing.

Format: Loose flowers, pyramid tea bags and standard tea bags can have different packaging and production costs.

Convenience: Tea bags offer measured portions and quick preparation, which can be valuable if you drink tea at work or while travelling.

Taste: A tea you actually enjoy drinking regularly may offer more practical value than a cheaper product that stays unused.

Is Loose Leaf Better Value Than Tea Bags?

Not necessarily. Loose leaf can have a lower cost per serving in some packs, but tea bags offer convenience and consistent portions.

The better question is: What will you actually use?

If convenience helps you make tea every day, tea bags may make more sense for your routine.

How Should You Compare Herbal Tea Brands?

Use the same checklist for every brand:

  1. Price per serving

  2. Number of servings

  3. Ingredient list

  4. Tea format

  5. Sourcing information

  6. Taste and flavour

  7. How easy it is to prepare

For example, Blue Tea's She Balance 60-teabag pack is currently ₹699, or about ₹11.65 per cup. Its 90-teabag option is ₹849, bringing the cost to about ₹9.43 per cup.

So, is premium herbal tea worth paying more for? It depends on what you are paying for. A higher price makes more sense when the ingredients, format, sourcing, taste or convenience offer something you genuinely value.

Prices can change, so this article should be updated whenever product pricing changes.
